On December 30, 1984, Joseph and Delia Batie gave birth to Andra Day, an American singer of soul and R&B. The couple raised their four children in Southern California, including her. Andra claimed in a prior interview that her ability to sing runs in her family. She claimed that Delia, her mother, is a gifted soprano but is too shy to perform.
Delia was employed for a long time as a janitor at the First United Methodist Church in Chula Vista. When Andra was seventeen, Delia and Joseph broke up, and they finally got divorced. Currently, Delia Batie writes children’s books under the pen name D.A. Battie. I Hear the Wind Blow and Wonder is a book that Delia authored in 2021.
Since then, she has taken her writing seriously. In Las Vegas, her father has a business that manufactures backyard grills. She resides in the San Fernando Valley with Andra’s mother. With The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Andra received her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, capping up a fantastic year for her in 2021.
The candidates were recognized from their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact. When Andre’s identity was disclosed, Delia and Joseph were present. The singer/actress went on to say that when her name was called, her family jumped with joy. Andre said upon receiving the prize,
“My parents were in the room with me, which makes me so happy because they put up with me for so long,” the speaker said, referring to the folks who were in the room with her.
Andra Day’s Ethnicity
Andra Day was raised in southeast San Diego in an African-American family. That was the area where the majority of Black people lived. The actress and singer has already talked about how her family ended up living on the West Coast. According to her, the Batie family and other residents living south of Interstate 8 moved there to work with or for the Navy’s sizable Pacific Fleet.
She became just the second Black woman to win best actress in a drama film when she took home the Golden Globe in 2021. Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in The Color Purple in 1986, was the first. Rise, a song written by Andra after learning that one of her friends had cancer, has now become as an unofficial anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement. Andra said she felt honored when asked what she thought. She added that the BLM movement sought to oppose oppression and injustice.
