Nicci Gilbert is denouncing the plaques she received for Tory Lanez sampling Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” amid the guilty verdict in his case with Megan Thee Stallion.

In a post to social media on Saturday (December 24), the acclaimed singer is seen removing multiple plaques and medals from her walls that came from Tory’s breakout hit, “Say It.” In her caption, Gilbert expressed empathy for the Canadian-born rapper/singer, but emphasized that she stands with Meg on the matter.

“The Jury has spoken and I respect the jury’s decision,” she began. “I hate to see another young black man going to jail, especially days before Christmas. I feel terrible for his children and family…Honestly I feel bad for Tory.

“At the same time I support Meg and I believe her. It’s a shame that our community is so broken that we relentlessly attack victims, but I get it,” Gilbert continued. “Hurt people hurt people…This victory was a win for all victims and hopefully sent a strong message. I stand with MTS as an advocate for women and girls.”

She went on to note the circumstances that could have led to Tory’s demise, and added that she thinks he will become a better man when the dust settles.

“I pray for Tory as an advocate for artists and creatives,” she wrote. “Tory is a young black man, who became super famous very quickly. This made him a talented creative who lacked the emotional intelligence and development needed to navigate that kind of success. He made a very poor decision, but I believe he will come out of this a better man and artist.”

She ended her caption with a bit of a twist, however, insinuating she hadn’t ever gotten paid from the smash hit.

“Before y’all ask me to give some money back from the single…I’m still waiting on that paperwork from 2015,” Nicci Gilbert said.

To date, 2015’s “Say It” is Tory’s second highest charting song as a solo artist. It peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went on to spend 24 weeks on the chart.

In a 2016 interview with Essence, Nicci Gilbert co-signed the song and praised Tory for doing a great job with it.

“I’ll be honest,” Gilbert said. “A lot of rappers out here, you don’t understand what they’re saying. That millennial generation, you’re like, ‘What’s going on?’ But thank God, Tory did a great job.”

Tory Lanez was found guilty of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He now faces a maximum of 22 years in prison and deportation to his native Canada.

He is currently behind bars awaiting sentencing – which has yet to be scheduled. In the meantime, his fans have started a petition for his release.
