WA: Shenton Park and Dianella fires blanket northern Perth suburbs in smoke

Publish date: 2024-05-29

A house fire that has gutted a property and a separate bushfire have covered Perth in smoke and its accompanying odour.

A home in the northern suburb of Dianella, just north of the CBD, was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived after being called to the corner of Harold and Elsegood streets about 7.25am on Monday.

They managed to bring the blaze under control, and prevented it spreading to nearby properties, but not before the flames all but destroyed the home.

No one is understood to have been injured.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a structure fire advice as a precaution, urging nearby residents to stay inside, close their doors and windows, and switch off their airconditioners.

Although that last piece of advice may be difficult to follow, with Perth hitting 36C on Monday, and up to 38C is forecast for Tuesday.

Wind blew the smoke westerly, while the smell of the fire could be detected in suburbs much farther to the north.

Compounding the smoke problem was an earlier bushfire in Shenton Park, just 4km west of the CBD.

It started about 4.30pm on Sunday in bushland off Lemnos St, with firefighters spending the night keeping it under control.
